One of my favourite monthly pieces to share with you all is this round-up of things I’ve found over the course of the month that I wanted to share with you.
This is a long, full-of-links, email which might get cut-off by some email providers - I can recommend downloading the Substack App, which puts all your Substack newsletters in one place. I use it myself and really enjoy it.
Alternatively, you can read on my Substack webpage; Substack is the service I use to send out these emails; think of it as a blogging platform hosting my one-woman magazine.
Poems(!) of the month
The writing retreat I went on in June, tutored by Kim Moore, really nudged something in part of my brain. I’d fallen into the habit of thinking that the normal rhythms and worries of my life aren’t worth writing about, aren’t ’important enough’ to be represented in poetry. But over the course of the week there was so much discussion about how important hair, for example, is - and I was reminded of my favourite quote from 2019’s Little Women: “Writing things,” Amy says, “is what makes them important.”
And now for something completely different: Glen Powell.
On her newsletter
, wrote a fantastic feature all about Glen Powell. His two greatest attributes that help him be a real Movie Star: he likes women and he looks good in clothes.Luckily, just as the Twisters press is dying down, it’s time for Andrew Garfield (my other screen crush) to hit the ground promoting his new film, We Live In Time. If you haven’t yet seen his 2021 Masterpiece Tick, Tick… Boom! - please take this as your cue to do so.
In today’s ‘words have meanings’ news: what is a spicy book anyway?
I’m super interested in how the internet changes how we speak and write, and this discussion from
reminded me of Gretchen McCulloch’s fab book Because Internet (ad - Amazon affiliate link).Meanwhile, I’m loving how friendship bracelets are taking over the world.
As Paddington Bear says - if we’re kind and polite, the world will be right. I can’t wait for the third film to come out!
Wanting to escape to the mountains
I absolutely loved this tour of a mountain cabin in Washington State’s Methow Valley in the New York Times. To misquote Dolly Parton, it costs a lot of money to create something so simple and beautiful - and seeing this sent me straight to the Sims 4 to recreate it.
Plus, what I read last month (all Amazon affiliate links - I get a few pence kickback at no extra cost to you):
The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen - KJ Charles
Head Over Heels - Hannah Orenstein
A Lady’s Guide To Scandal - Sophie Irwin
Tiny Beautiful Things - Cheryl Strayed
The Undermining of Twyla and Frank - Megan Bannen
Cacophony of Bone - Kerri ní Dochartaigh
Love Story - Lindsey Kelk
